5 of the Best Blackjack Strategies
If you’re serious about delving into the realm of online blackjack, it is essential that you take some time to understand even the most basic blackjack strategy. With so many different ones to use, we at Crown Bingo have cut the list down to the best blackjack strategies.
If you are new to playing online casino games and are not 100% sure how to play blackjack, there may be some terms that are lost on newer players. Two terms would be ‘hard hand’ or ‘soft hand.’ Here the difference between the two is simply one card, the ace. If a player is dealt an ace, their hand is considered to be ‘soft’ due to the fact an ace can be 1 or 11. A hard hand, however, is outlined as having two rigid cards i.e. their value can not be changed.
At Crown Bingo we like to be as transparent with our players as possible when playing any of our live casino games, slots or online bingo; so you can take these blackjack tips on board and take your game to the next level! Please be aware that although some Blackjack strategies can help improve your game, there is no guarantee that they will cause a win.
1/ Blackjack Strategy: Always Double Down on a Hard 11
Striking up a hard 11 from the blackjack dealer will typically put you in a very powerful position as there are few hard hands that equate to 10. Doubling down in blackjack essentially allows the player to make another bet based on the first card they have been dealt. Depending on the casino site or land-based casino, this rule typically applies to only the first card dealt on the flop and is not available once the second card has been dealt, so we advise players to check the rules before deploying this strategy.
Whilst some readers may take this strategy as a double bet, the reality is that the chances of the dealer pulling out a higher hand after you double down somewhat reduces the risk of the fold. Basically, if the dealer has a lower card on the fold, it's definitely time to double down.
2/ Blackjack Strategy: Never Make an Insurance Bet
At most blackjack tables, if the dealer draws an ace from the flop as their first card, players are offered the opportunity to make an insurance bet on the dealer dealing a 10 value card as their next card.
We highly recommend that players aren’t tempted to take the insurance bet, even if you have a hard 19 or 20, do not make the insurance bet. Valued at 2-1, players can be drawn into these odds with the thought of doubling their money.
Widely regarded as a ‘sucker bet’, the actual odds of the dealer drawing a 10 valued card is much higher than the odds on offer. Save your money and dodge the insurance bet.
3/ Blackjack Strategy: Split a Pair of 8s and Aces
Many players may read that title and think it may be an outrageous tactic if the dealer were to draw a 9, 10 or ace. Whilst many view this tactic as an underdog mentality, the reality is you’re much less likely to be the underdog playing with 2 hands with a value of 8 as opposed to a hard 16. This tactic is focussed more towards long-run profitability. It is not a guaranteed way to beat the dealer, but it most certainly gives players a better chance.
The crux of this strategy is that in the case of aces, it increases your chances of winning; splitting 8s can reduce your losses and gives you a better chance to increase profits, depending on the dealer’s upcard.
4/ Blackjack Strategy: Give the Dealer a Chance to Bust
For those players who may not know what bust means, it’s essentially when the cards that are dealt exceed 21, meaning you’ve surpassed blackjack and have bust. What you must remember is that the aim of the game is to beat the dealer, so if they bust, you win (given you haven’t bust yourself).
Our advice is if the dealer holds lower hard cards such as 5, 6 or 7, the best bet is to split your hand or double down as the dealer’s chances of busting are quite high. However, it's probably best to do this if you are holding a soft hand as the risk of the dealer busting is greater than yours.
5/ Blackjack Strategy: Stand with a Pair of 9’s if the Dealer has a 7
The number 9 is always a difficult one to decipher in the game of blackjack. Many players will say it is imperative to split a pair of 9s when playing online blackjack. Whilst in many cases it is advisable to split; if the dealer has a 7, we think it's best to stick with the pair of 9s.
Within the deck, players must remember there are four times as many 10 valued cards, so the chances of the dealer drawing one is much higher than any other card. So, with their 7, if they were to pull a 10, their hand value would only be 17 where your hand would be at 18.
